"The police shall, however, impose necessary conditions."

CHENNAI:
The Madras High Court has directed the Vellore police to permit the non-political Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam to hold a public meeting in support of Sri Lankan Tamils on October 10.
The police shall, however, impose necessary conditions while according permission, said Justice K. Chandru, while disposing of a writ petition from P. Murugesan, district secretary of the organisation.
The Sathuvachari police had denied permission for a meeting on October 3, claiming it would affect public peace in view of the coming local body elections.
Holding that the local police had no authority to reject the application, the petitioner sought a direction to permit the meeting at the Vellore-Sathuvachari RDO Salai on October 10 or any other subsequent date.
