Tuticorin: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko on Thursday urged electors to vote against the Democratic Progressive Alliance, which had "deceived people with bogus promises during the Assembly polls." Kicking off his local bodies election campaign in the district at Karuppur in Pudur block, he said people had realised they had been cheated by the DPA Government. The tall promises in the DMK election manifesto, including distribution of colour TV sets and two acres of land had not reached the actual beneficiaries.
Statement slammed
He ridiculed the statement by a Minister that 25 lakh TV sets would be procured for the distribution by floating global tenders. "But who is going to give the cable connection to the beneficiaries and why is the government not keen on running cable TV operations?" Mr. Vaiko slammed the State Government for arresting senior MDMK functionary Nanjil Sampath. Terming it fascism, he said, "By arresting Mr. Sampath, they are trying to weaken the electioneering of the MDMK-AIADMK alliance in the Assembly by-election in Madurai and the civic polls." He alleged that the Democratic Progressive Alliance was resorting to "money politics" in its bid to win the by-election. Mr Vaiko said the State government has handled the Chikungunya outbreak in a lackadaisical manner.
