BOLLYWOOD CALLING: Anupama Verma
She has straddled both the film and fashion worlds. But model-cum-actress Anupama Verma, who is not just a pretty face but also has academic qualifications that few in tinsel town can boast, wants to break new ground. In Delhi recently, the young actress revealed that she had studied business management and always stood first in her class. However, modelling offers came pouring in after she was signed on by photographer Shantanu Sheorey for the famous Digjam Suiting ad opposite debonair Shekhar Kapur. "I was eating lunch with my family at the Capital's Gymkhana Club when Shantanu Shorey spotted me. I was only in the ninth standard but this did not stop me from going in for a screen test. After the ad with Kapur in 1991-92 I got various lucrative advertisement offers." On her metamorphosis from a model into a vivacious actress, she says she did not have to struggle to get a foothold in Bollywood. Even though she bagged a good role in Jackie Shroff's home production "Grahan", her innings in Bollywood ran into rough weather as her debut film got delayed by nearly five years. And because Anupama was contract-bound, she could not sign any new film. "However, I am extremely proud of `Grahan'. It was a hard-hitting performance. Moreover, it starred Jackie Shroff and Manisha Koirala." "Nana Patekar's `Vadh' was a feather in my cap. It was about a young girl who enters into wedlock with a person twice her age. It was a critically acclaimed film. Even though I am a model, I have done various non-glamorous roles in Hindi films. I did `Kya Yahi Pyaar Hai' with Aftab Shivdasani and Amisha Patel and played a part in `Padmashree Laloo Prasad Yadav' that starred Mahesh Manjrekar and Suniel Shetty. Then I also did a cameo in `Chameli'." At the moment, Anupama is hosting a travel show for a TV channel and banking on her upcoming film. - Madhur Tankha
