KURNOOL: The ILO-sponsored Elimination of Child Labour Project in Kurnool district has been wound up. All 1,526-community organisers at habitation level and nine field officers at constituency level appointed under the project would lose their jobs starting October 1. The project was launched six months ago with a financial assistance of Rs. 1 crore extended by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Rs. 10 crores grant from the State Government. However, there was delay in release of the amounts from the Government, which planned to revamp the programme. Addressing a meeting of mandal literacy officers and adult education officials here on Thursday, the Collector said the child labour project would be revamped by forming mandal committees with MLOs, MROs and others associated with the Education Department.
Survey report
A survey conducted recently identified 34,000 children who were school dropouts in the district. The Collector gave a target of 200 children for each MLO for bringing them back to school .
Project revamped
He wanted them to utilise the services of non-governmental organisations and social activists to bring the children back to schools. According to reports, the project was being revamped as the State Government found it too high to mobilise the Rs. 10 crores for a single district. Also, the officials associated with the project were not sure of achieving a hundred per cent result.
