Apathy alleged on the part of Kollam corporation

Staff Reporter

`Poor cleanliness reason for epidemics'

  • `No steps taken to start garbage treatment plant'
  • `Realise projects for which allocation has been made'

KOLLAM: Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) councillors in the Kollam City Corporation have alleged `utter failure' on the part of the Corporation authorities to keep the city clean, which has resulted in the onslaught of epidemics like chikungunya and dengue fever.

At a press conference here on Thursday, UDF councillors led by Opposition Leader in the council George D. Kattil said, in the last one year no proper garbage clearance or mosquito control programme has been effected in the city.

They alleged that the corporation authorities were engaged in a spree to purchase air conditioned cars even by diverting funds meant for providing food for anganwadi students.

The vehicles were purchased under the label of conducting surveillance on garbage clearance.

While formalities for starting a garbage treatment plant for the city was almost completed by the previous council, the present council has not done anything in this regard, Mr. Kattil alleged. It only exposes the lethargy on part of the corporation authorities to keep the city clean, he said. In spite of making budgetary allocations during the past six years of LDF rule of the corporation for slum clearance, nothing has been done in this connection. Mr. Kattil said the bulk of the projects for which budgetary allocations were made since the past six years have not been realised.

Such projects include a law college, development of public markets at Tangasseri, Thevally and Ayathil, ensuring proper drinking water supply, street lighting and an electric crematorium.
