LUCKNOW: Every second child in Uttar Pradesh is undernourished and every third new-born is underweight, according to a study by the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN). In more than half of the districts of the State, the prevalence of undernutrition in children between 1-5 years is between 50 to 75 per cent, it said adding that every second child in the State is ``undernourished.'' The State ranked fourth with respect to prevalence of underweight children under three years of age while stunted growth prevalence in the state is the highest in the country, the study said. Every third infant is born low weight, less than 2.5 kilogram, in the state, it said. Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for 8.3 million undernourished children in India, of which approximately 3.3. million are severely undernourished, the study said. - PTI
