Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) will send a 10-member team of specialists to Cherthala daily to assist the local health authorities in managing the current outbreak of chikungunya till the situation stabilises. At a press conference here on Thursday, IMA State secretary R. Ramesh, president C.K. Chandrasekharan and convener of IMA epidemic control cell Srijith N. Kumar said that apart from conducting field research, the IMA members will actively involve themselves in organising preventive measures and health education classes at Cherthala. IMA has also prepared a vector control policy document, which will be handed over to the Government on Monday. Doctors pointed out that direct chikungunya deaths had not been documented anywhere in the world. Hence it was important to investigate and ascertain the actual cause of the large number of deaths reported at Cherthala during the current outbreak, they said.
Imams' council
The Kerala Imams Council has criticised political parties for blaming one another instead of taking steps on a war footing to check the spreading of diseases like chikungunya. Ashraf Moulavi Muvattupuzha, chairman of the Council, said in a statement here that dirty surroundings were to an extent responsible for the situation.
