Staff Reporter
NIZAMABAD: The situation in Bodhan and Nizamabad towns, which were rocked by communal violence on Wednesday, is slowly returning to normal. A majority of shops and business establishments, banks, schools functioned as usual. The law and order situation in the affected areas of Ahmadipura Colony, Shivajinagar, Pedda Bazar Nehru Park and Gandhi Chowk areas is under control, but still tense.
Police pickets posted
Police pickets were posted near every mosque and temple in the communally sensitive areas in both the towns. Security was beefed up by deploying additional forces from Karimnagar and Medak. To instil confidence among the people, Deputy IG Anjinikumar, Collector I.S. Sri Naresh and Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra Laddha toured the affected areas and interacted with shopkeepers and residents. Speaking to the The Hindu , Mr. Anjinikumar said peace committee meetings were being conducted in the jurisdiction of every police station of both the towns. The police pickets would continue as long as they were required in sensitive areas. No untoward incident has been reported on Thursday.
Cases booked
Thirty persons were taken into custody and 14 cases booked against persons belonging to two communities in connection with Wednesday's clashes. Mr. Anjinikumar said no procession would be allowed. Elders of different communities were requested to extend full support in protecting peace and communal harmony. Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party State president N. Indrasena Reddy strongly condemned the alleged "callous attitude" of the police in handling the situation. Addressing a press conference after visiting the riot-hit areas in the district headquarter, he alleged that the police failed to take action when shops and business establishments of a particular community were attacked. He sought adequate compensation to the affected people. Referring to the bomb blast in Hyderabad some time ago, he accused Minister Mohammad Ali Shabbir of "encouraging" the accused persons by visiting their relatives' houses.
