Minister's concern over damage to Dharia dam

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Irrigation Minister Sanwarlal Jat announced in the Assembly here on Thursday that the Dharia dam in Desuri tehsil of Pali district, damaged in this year's heavy rains, would be reconstructed shortly after conducting various tests on its capacity and strength.

Mr. Jat admitted during question hour that the dam had been breached at 38 places when it overflowed on August 19 last during the heavy monsoon rains. He said the dispersible soil test was not conducted at the time of construction of the dam.

The Minister pointed out that no dam had been completely destroyed during the recent floods in the State and various water reservoirs still contained water of nearly 85 per cent of the irrigation capacity.

"However, the damage caused to the Dharia dam on its first storage is a cause for concern.'' While assuring the House that disciplinary action would be taken against those responsible for the dam's weak structure, Mr. Jat said the sand in Desuri was found fit by the Civil Engineering Faculty of Jainarain Vyas University, Jodhpur, before the construction started.

A committee headed by Chief Engineer Jaipal Singh, probing the causes of the dam's breach, is likely to submit its report by the month-end.
