Bangalore: The specialised technology of mechatronics, combing aspects of mechanical and electronic engineering, will now be available to students of 110 engineering colleges in the State affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). To facilitate this, VTU Vice-Chancellor K. Balaveera Reddy and Rashmikant Joshi, managing director, Festo India, and Danny Gauch, regional sales coordination manager of the parent German firm Festo, signed a memorandum of understanding here on Thursday. The VTU-Festo Centre for Mechatronics will be located on the Festo campus in Bommasandra Industrial Area here. This is the 11th such MoU between the university and industries, Mr. Reddy said. The other collaborating industries include IBM, Microsoft, Cisco and Bosch. A centre for robotics, set up in association with Bosch is coming up in Mysore. The significance of the present tie-up, according to Mr. Reddy, is the increased use of mechatronics technology in control systems in both aviation and automobiles. "By 2010 very few automotive controls will require human effort and this is already happening in heavy vehicles. Engineering graduates with a mechatronics background will be sought after in large numbers as the automobile industry in our country keeps expanding," he explained. The 50-year-old Festo specialises in solutions for automotive, medical, packaging, aerospace and manufacturing sectors.
