Arrested

HASSAN: Police arrested four persons in connection with the theft of 3,50 quintals of aluminium wire belonging to the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company, worth Rs. 35,000. The arrested are Manju of Gandsi, Jagga of Hiriyur, Shivegowda of Belaghatte and Naga of Makanahalli. Search is on for two persons who are absconding, according to police. — Staff Correspondent

Dharna staged

Raichur: Members of the district unit of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Horata Samithi staged a dharna here on Thursday demanding that the State Government pursue the case for grant of special status for the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, with the Centre. About 50 activists led by samithi's secretary general Hanumantharaya Kuri staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office. Later, they submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Tushar Girinath. — Staff Correspondent

Woman drowns

Raichur: Devamma (25), wife of Hanumahta, drowned while she was crossing a flooded nalla in the limits of Bannigol village of Lingsugur taluk on Tuesday. The Mudgal police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Loan mela

BIJAPUR: The State Bank of India will conduct a 25-day car and housing loan utsav in Bijapur from Friday. The loan mela, which is being organised jointly by the three local SBI branches, will be held at the IMA Building on Station Road. Senior branch manager Ramesh told presspersons here on Thursday that in the normal course, the bank charged an interest of 9.75 per cent. Those who take loans at the utsav would get a rebate of 0.5 per cent. Senior bank officers P.V. Gopal and R.B.V. Rao were present. — Staff Correspondent

Found dead

MYSORE: Three persons were run over by train in Mandya district in the past two days. Efforts are on to ascertain the identity of the victims. In a press release here on Thursday, the Railway Police said that a 40-year-old woman and a girl aged 15 were run over by a train between Mandya and Yeliur on Tuesday. A 40-year-old was run over by a train between Hanakere and Mandya on Wednesday. The bodies have been kept at the Mandya Government Hospital Mortuary.
