SHOWCASING CULTURE: The Survarna Samskruthi Dibbana begins in Belur on Thursday

HASSAN: The Minister for Women and Child Welfare, H.K. Kumaraswamy, flagged off "Suvarna Samskruthi Dibbana-2006" at Belur on Thursday. It will cover Hassan and Tumkur districts spreading awareness on Karnataka's culture, tradition and literature.

Inaugurating the dibbana at a function on the premises of Sri Channakeshava Temple in Belur, he said the district had made a significant contribution to the fields of art, architecture, culture and tradition. The first Kannada inscription, found in Halmidi village near Belur, was of great help in establishing the antiquity of Kannada, he said.

He said the State Government was planning to construct 10 Suvarna Ranga Mandiras (auditoria) across the State, at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh each to promote cultural activities in rural areas. He distributed prizes to students who won various cultural competitions held on the occasion.

Deputy Commissioner in-charge F.R. Jamaadar read out a message sent by District in-charge and Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna. Retired Professor, A.S. Kale Gowda, recalled the contribution of various personalities in enriching the State's heritage and in the unification of the State.

Festive look

The Belur town wore a festive look. People stood on either side of the streets to watch the dibbana consisting of tableau, including one depicting the monolithic statue of Gommateshwara of Shravanabelagola and folk art forms.

The State Government decided to organise dibbanas to mark the golden jubilee of the unification of Karnataka. Dibbanas were flagged off simultaneously from eight locations in the State on Thursday. They will showcase art, culture, tradition and history of the State, besides focusing on the achievements made so far and also to pay tributes to those who had fought for the unification of the State. The dibbanas will reach Bangalore on Rajyotsava Day.

B. Sriramulu, Minister for Tourism and Textiles, flagged off the "dibbana" at Hampi in the absence of M.P. Prakash, Home Minister and district in-charge, who had to skip the programme to attend the coordination committee meeting at Bangalore.

The dibbana, which started from the Virupaksha temple after a formal function, was led by the temple elephant followed by women carrying "poorna kumbha kalasa", traditional band and artistes in traditional attire and youths performing "kolata" as it moved towards Hospet passing through several villages on the way.

It would pass through almost all the villages in the seven taluks of the district till October 13th before entering Davanagere district.

Earlier, Mr. Sriramulu lit the traditional lamp to launch the dibbana. He underlined the need to remember the contributions, struggle and sacrifice of the people for build a united Karnataka.

H.R. Gaviyappa, Hospet MLA, presided over the function. Govind, president of Hampi Gram Panchayat, spoke. Arvind Srivastav, Deputy Commissioner; C.M. Shirol, CEO, Zilla Panchayat; and B.P. Adnur, Assistant Commissioner, were present.

Chornur Kotrappa, Assistant Director Kannada and Culture, welcomed the gathering.
