BELLARY: Tension gripped Halkundi in Bellary taluk, a village on the State border over immersion of an idol of goddess Durga in a canal on Wednesday night. The village is calm on Thursday, say police. Halkundi villagers opposed the immersion of an idol, which was installed at Oblapuram village in Andhra Pradesh by Oblapuram Mining Company (OMC) belonging to suspended BJP MLC Mr. Janardhan Reddy, into the canal in Bellary city. When the idol mounted on a tractor was passing through the village, residents prevented it from going further. The efforts of Sriramulu, Minister for Tourism and Textiles to persuade the villagers to allow the idol to be immersed, went in vain. Bellary (Rural) Police rushed to the spot along with additional force. At present, the idol mounted on the tractor is stranded on the road.
