Clashes: rumours keep people indoors

Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD : People got panicky and confined themselves to the safety of their homes; shopkeepers downed shutters with rumours over fresh bout of violence in Devi Road and other communally-sensitive areas of the town on Thursday evening.

As a result, some of the main roads and Tirumala Talkies chowrastha, Gandhi Chowk weekly market, Angadi Bazaar, Pusal Galli, and Pedda Bazaar wore a deserted look by evening itself.

The police while patrolling in the streets were seen instructing people to leave from public places and businessmen to shut down their commercial establishments immediately.

In an effort to disperse crowds, the police brandished lathis at gathering in Gandhi Chowk area. Senior police officers were seen going round the town.

Meanwhile, rumours were afloat that the rioters indulged in violence in certain areas and police opened fire. However, police quelled these rumours.
