CDs on road safety to be distributed free to schools

CHENNAI: Awareness of road safety rules is needed among all sections of society to minimise accidents, speakers at a function held on Thursday to release multi-lingual CDs on road safety said.

The CDs, to be distributed free of cost to schools, cinema halls and all State Transport Corporation undertakings, have been put together by Sree Balaji Seva Trust.

While Minister for Information Parithi Ilamvazhuthi said NGOs must get involved in awareness creation, Transport Secretary Debendranath Sarangi said respect for the rule of law was needed. Around 1,000 new vehicle registrations were being made in Chennai everyday, he added.

Road accidents accounted for 70,000 deaths in the country every year and three lakh serious injuries, V. Vaikunth, former Director General of police and managing trustee, Sree Balaji Seva Trust, said.

Road infrastructure must be upgraded as per town planning principles and the Motor Vehicles Act should be strictly implemented, he added.

Screening in cinemas

The 15-minute CD, in Hindi, English and Tamil, will be shown in cinema halls all over the State, Abhirami Ramanathan, general secretary, Film Federation of India, said.
