Chennai : The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, M. Krishnaswamy, started his campaign for the local body polls in Chennai on Thursday. He canvassed for Congress candidates and candidates representing the Democratic Progressive Alliance in various wards in Adyar, Triplicane, Chepauk, Nungambakkam, Purasawalkam and Egmore. Crowds gathered around the makeshift stages put up for the leader. Badges and pamphlets with the `Hand' symbol were distributed. Mr. Krishnaswamy said chikungunya had become an epidemic owing to the lack of efforts made by the former AIADMK Government to control mosquito growth. Although a high-level committee had been formed to tackle this issue, there was no action taken, he alleged. "Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is fulfilling all promises that he had made. People know this and will vote for the alliance," he said. The TNCC chief said that several development projects had come to Tamil Nadu, as the Central and State governments worked in tandem. Similarly, the city would improve only if the State and the Chennai Corporation Council agreed on projects. "For instance, the flyovers built during the DMK regime have helped to ease traffic congestion. But in the last few years, not even one flyover has come up," he said. Mr. Krishnaswamy also said that leaders had to be approachable so that people's representatives could bring public issues to their attention directly. Deputy Mayor R. Thiagaraj and candidates contesting in the local body polls accompanied him during the campaign.
