Resentment over eviction notice

Staff Reporter

District Collector promises rehabilitation of NGOs

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The eviction notice served on government employees living in the NGO quarters at Chakka has stirred up resentment among the families living there. The notice served by District Collector N. Ayyappan on September 29 directed 50 families to vacate the quarters in 15 days, as the land had to be acquired for the development of the city's international airport.

The welfare association of the employees, in a representation to the District Collector on Thursday, said no arrangement was made to provide alternative housing to the employees though many government quarters in the city were lying vacant.

The authorities did not take into consideration the fact that if the eviction was carried out now without providing for any alternative accommodation, the education of the children of the employees would be affected, the representatives told the Collector. The representatives pointed out that there were many unauthorised persons living in government quarters in the city. There were some individuals who were staying on in government quarters even after their retirement from service. They managed to do this, thanks to their political clout, the representatives told Mr. Ayyappan.

The District Collector told The Hindu that the employees would not be left in the lurch on account of the land acquisition. "We will find alternative accommodation for them. There are vacant quarters in the city. We are also planning to evict unauthorised occupants from government quarters. The land will be handed over only after all the families at Chakka are rehabilitated," he said.
