HYDERABAD: Demanding a fair deal for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes students of the Hyderabad Public School, the SC/ST Parents Committee of the school has asked for a hostel for these students on the school premises with immediate effect. Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, committee president M. Samuel alleged that people from `higher castes' dominated the 29-member HPS management and that there was no representation for SC/ST students. The committee members also sought fee waiver from the Tribal Welfare Department for ST students who had made it to the general quota by virtue of their academic performance. The Social Welfare Department was also asked to provide a girls' hostel for SC students, similar to the one that already existed for ST girls. The committee also wanted the income criterion for Below Poverty Line children to be raised from Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 30,000. There were 1,200 SC/ST students studying in HPS Ramanthapur and Begumpet and currently, the campus boarding facility was for only 450 students.
