HYDERABAD: The time of the year when the eye turns sore is round the corner. One by one cases of conjunctivitis, also known as `Madras Eye', are sprouting in the city. Irritation in the eyes, frequent rubbing of the eye, redness and itching could be symptoms that you could be in for a really sore time with your sight. Conjunctivitis, an infection causing the thin skin covering the eyeball to become inflamed can be viral and bacterial as well. And both forms are contagious. Doctors advise those affected with conjunctivitis to wear glasses, use separate soaps, towels and other articles. They can also use antibiotics to treat the infection. Washing the eye periodically with warm water may prevent unaffected persons from getting the infection. Usually the infection starts with one eye and spreads to the other. The thin lining of upper and lower eyelids that extend to the eyeball rim become irritated, inflamed, red and stinging with watery discharge. The eyelids could also get stuck to each other after sleeping.
