Association to elect new Catholicos

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church has published the agenda for the crucial meeting of the Malankara Syrian Christian Association scheduled n October 12 at Parumala.

Top on the agenda of the Association, one of the largest assembly of elected representatives in the world with 4,000 members, would be the decision on the successor of the present head of the Church Baselius Mar Thoma Didymos I.

Originally four Metropolitans were in the fray for the post — Stephanos Mar Theodosius, Thomas Mar Makarios Mathews Mar Epiphanios and Paulose Mar Milithios.

However, it appeared that age and seniority, the major criteria for selection to the post of the Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, was done away with this time, as there was a strong sentiment against quick successions, which in the time of legal wrangles may create confusion.

This was evident from the decision of the Church synod deciding in favour of the relatively junior among the four, Paulose Mar Milithios.
