Suicide by student

NEW DELHI: A Class XII student allegedly hanged himself to death at his Vikaspuri residence in West Delhi on Wednesday. He was suffering from depression for the past few months.

According to the police, the tragedy came to light around 9 p.m. when Gaurav's family found the door to his room locked. When despite repeated knocks they did not get any response from inside, they broke open the door and found him hanging from the ceiling fan.

Suicide attempt

NEW DELHI: Unable to overcome the debt trap he had fallen into, a middle-aged businessman along with his wife and three teenaged children allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming poison at Paschim Vihar in West Delhi on Wednesday. While the couple is stated to be out of danger, the children were discharged from hospital on Thursday. The police received a call around 10 p.m. from 47-year-old Virender Syal claiming that he along with his wife Rashmi (44), daughters Ambika (18) and Radhika (16) and son Shivam had consumed phenyl. The police rushed to the spot and took all five to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital.

In his statement to the police, Mr. Syal said he had taken a loan of Rs. 60 lakhs from a private bank but could not return it in the stipulated time.

Sealing decision

NEW DELHI: A meeting between the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee and senior officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Thursday failed to decide when to begin the sealing drive against businesses not covered under the notifications issued by the Centre. The Monitoring Committee is likely to take a decision in the next couple of days.

Sources in the civic body said keeping in mind the non-availability of security forces due to the ongoing festive season, no decision could be taken on when the drive should begin. The MCD officials suggested that it would be risky to begin the sealing drive in the absence of adequate police personnel.

Five held for thefts

NEW DELHI: Five persons, including an alleged receiver of stolen property, have been arrested by the North-West Delhi police on charges of stealing two-wheelers. The police claim to have recovered 12 stolen motorcycles and solved 17 cases of vehicle theft with their arrests.

According to the police, the accused -- Nitin (18), Manish (19), Kanhaiya (20) and Peter Massey (29) -- were arrested on Wednesday.

Man arrested

NEW DELHI: One person has been arrested by the North Delhi police for allegedly storing and selling firecrackers without licence. The police have recovered 346 kg of firecrackers from his godown.

According to the police, Sunder Lal was stopped by the Bara Hindu Rao police when he was seen moving with a huge bag around midnight on Wednesday. The bag contained firecrackers. The police then searched his residence and recovered 11 more bags of firecrackers, costing a total of around Rs.1lakh.
