dated October 7, 1956: Growth of Press in India

The President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, declaring open the new building of the Indian and Eastern Newspaper Society in New Delhi on October 5, paid a warm tribute to the role the Indian Press played in pre-Independence days and after. He said: "After freedom the role of the Press may be said to have changed to a large extent. The foreign power withdrew and the accredited leaders of the people stepped in to take its place. It was but natural that the Press, at any rate a large section of it, should review its policy in view of this fundamental change, namely, preservation of the freedom already won." The function was attended, among others, by Prime Minister Nehru.
