Letters to the Editor
The editorial "Health emergency" (Oct. 6), concluding with Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer's observation that the deprivation of the human right to health by mosquito bites is a national challenge, throws light on the apathy of authorities at various levels towards curbing the mosquito menace. Though Delhi and Kerala are the worst affected by dengue and chikungunya as of now, it is possible that many other parts of the country may soon fall prey to the diseases if the official lethargy continues.
The editorial is a timely alert to the Governments to not only prevent but also control the spread of the deadly viral diseases. Government agencies seem to have given up their public health responsibilities, because of which mosquito proliferation has become rampant. As in other countries, they should enlist the people's cooperation to prevent and control the diseases.
T. Shivaji Rao,
This refers to the report "AIIMS campus hygiene under scrutiny" (Oct. 6). It is regrettable that hygiene in the premier medical institution of the country is so pathetic. That too when the Union Health Minister is the president of its governing body!
K. Balakesari,
