Shocking

The report that a woman belonging to a village near Chennai was tied to a lamppost and beaten up in broad daylight by a group of villagers (Sept. 26) is shocking. The picture that accompanied the report showed Shanthi tied to the lamppost but not anyone thrashing her. But a large group of men and three young boys were seen. Some were smiling. One wonders when our villagers will learn that they cannot take law into their hands for an alleged crime committed by a person. We hope the men who beat up Shanthi will be punished. The practice of group violence against women could spread to other villages. It could have a negative influence in the minds of young boys.

Sangida Khwaja,
Chennai
