UNI issue: Gowda seeks Manmohan's intervention
P. Sunderarajan
NEW DELHI:
Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Deve Gowda has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stall the takeover of United News of India (UNI) by a media group.
In a letter to Dr. Singh, Mr. Gowda noted that in the 45 years of its existence, the news organisation had served to strengthen the foundations of democracy by maintaining the highest journalistic traditions of free, fair and objective reporting and had made a name for itself as one of the most credible news sources in the country.
"I am shocked to learn that it is now being taken by one media group that is interested merely in its own expansion.
Any change in the independent character of UNI would cause irreparable damage to the cause of democracy and free press," he said.
