Police claim to have busted espionage ring

  • The arrested are Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals
  • Pencil sketch of Delhi Cantonment area recovered

NEW DELHI: The Delhi police have busted an espionage ring, involving a Pakistani and a Bangladeshi national and purportedly run by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), with the arrest of the duo from Madanpur Khadar here on Thursday. The police claimed to have recovered from them incriminating documents and a hand-made sketch of some sensitive installations of Delhi Cantonment.

    Tip-off

According to Deputy Commissioner Alok Kumar, the Special Cell received a tip-off that an ISI agent would come to Madanpur Khadar in South Delhi to hand over some secret documents to his contact. A team, under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner Ravi Shankar, arrested the suspect and recovered from him secret documents, including a pencil sketch of the Delhi Cantonment area.

The accused identified himself as Ali Rehman Jalal of Madaripur in Bangladesh. On his information, the police arrested his handler Mohammad Muzaffar Khan of Karachi and recovered some more confidential documents from him.

Jalal allegedly revealed that he had been working for Khan for the past nine months. Khan told the police that after completing matriculation, he did a diploma course in electricals in the Karachi Polytechnic School. In 1999, he shifted to Lahore, where he came in contact with one Babar, who introduced him to ISI officer Jeeshan.

Khan underwent a six-month training during which he was informed of various aspects of the Indian Army. He was also trained in camouflage.

In April last year, he came to Nagpur via the Atari border on a Pakistani passport. He stayed with his aunt in Amravati and in November he was provided a visa for visiting Bangladesh, a fake driving licence purportedly issued from Hissar in Haryana, an ATM card of Alfalah Bank, Pakistan, and Rs. 5,000 in cash.

"Khan was directed to contact another ISI agent in Bangladesh, who provided him a fake Bangladeshi passport. He then returned to India and met Jalal," said Mr. Kumar.
