Kolkata: The West Bengal Government has directed Kolkata's civic authorities to be on alert against dengue. The disease claimed a life here in August and has so far affected 29 persons. Three deaths have been reported from across the rest of the State where 350 persons were affected during the recent monsoon period. "The situation is not alarming but we are on alert. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and State Health Minister Surjya Kanta Mishra have enquired about the precautionary measures taken," Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, told The Hindu here on Friday. The incidence has been substantially lower compared to the monsoon period last year, Mr. Bhattacharya said. "Twelve people died and 3,223 were affected then." In the city the largest concentration of dengue cases has been reported from south Kolkata. Precautionary measures have been undertaken on a war footing, the KMC Mayor said. "Continuous spraying and fogging in the more vulnerable areas have been made. The civic authorities have undertaken a sustained public awareness campaign since July. Our health workers are covering each of the wards and the overall situation is being monitored by me."
