Sri Paramakalyani makes semifinals

Ambasamudram: Host Sri Paramakalyani College entered the semifinals of the Manonmanium Sundaranar Univeristy (men's) ball badminton tournament defeating Scott Christian College, Nagercoil 29-20, 29-24 at Alwarkurichi near here on Friday.

Porpanaiyan, Lakshmi win 800m

S. Porpanaiyan of St. Joseph's College and D. Lakshmi of H.H. Rajah's College won the 800m titles in the men's and women's section respectively at the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate athletic meet at Thanjavur on Friday.

The results: Men: 800m: 1. S. Porpanaiyan (SJC), 2. S. Silambarasan (SJC), 3. S. Rajkumar (JMC). 20km: 1. T. Raja Kumar (HHRC), 2. V. Rajini (HHRC), 3. D. Manimaran (Kumbakonam GAC). Hammer throw: 1. S. Sachin (Thanthai Hans Roever College), 2. A. Ashfaq Sheriff (JMC), 3. M. Kalidasan (HHRC).

SRNM, Sourashtra in final

At Madurai, SRNM College, Sattur and Sourashtra College will clash for the title in the Madurai Kamaraj University champions Trophy cricket tournament. The teams registered their second win in the four-team league on Friday.

The scores:

SRNM College 134 for eight in 30 overs (S. Pandiaraj 28, Manraj 27, Vijaya Kumar four for 23) bt Madura College 103 in 28.2 overs.

Thiagarajar College 146 for nine in 30 overs (Selvaraj 30, Murugan 28, Sethuraman three for 34) lost to Sourashtra College 150 for six in 29.3 overs (Sethuraman 28, Kasi Visuvanathan 26, Samathuvan 43 not out).

Dinesh has a ball

R. Dinesh of Combined Districts shone with the ball on day two of the under-22 cricket tournament for the Nanal Srinivasan Trophy at the CPT-IP ground in Chennai.

The left-arm spinner finished with figures of six for 58 from 29 overs to restrict City, resuming on 141 for four, to 251. K. Shri Vasudeva Das fell seven short of a hundred. R. Naresh remained unbeaten on 36.

In reply, Districts reached 108 for four. S. Suresh Kumar, on 34, and Shijith Chandran, on 22, will resume on Saturday morning. Off-spinner R. Ashwin took three of the four Districts wickets that fell.

The score: City 251 in 112 overs (K. Shri Vasudeva Das 93, R. Dinesh six for 58) vs Combined Districts 108 for four in 51 overs.

Ramesh shines

Ramesh's all-round performance (77 and six for 33) was the highlight of Apollo CC's 214-run win over Golden Arrows CC in a TNCA-TDCA third division league match at Tiruchi.

The scores: Third Division: Apollo CC 272 for nine in 45 overs (R.P. Ramnath 82, R. Ramesh 77) bt Golden Arrows CC 58 in 18.5 overs (R. Ramesh six for 33).

Pudukottai RC 178 in 41.1 overs (Saravanan 74, Jagan 48) bt Golden Chariot `B' 160 in 42 overs.

Fourth division: Cauvery RC 145 in 28.2 overs (Venkat 58) bt Gifted XI CC 123 in 28.3 overs.

Fifth division: Desert Rose CC 186 in 26 overs (Vijay 56, Ram 52) bt Merry Gold CC 71 in 14.5 overs (Prabat Dixit four for 17).

National sub-junior football from Oct. 18

The turf of the Nehru Stadium, fresh after the rains of late, is ready for the final round of the National sub-junior (under-16) football championship for the Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy to be held in Chennai from October 18 to 28.

The teams have been placed in two groups for the quarterfinal league with the top two from each group progressing to the semifinals. Group `A' has Mizoram, Chandigarh, Sikkim, Karnataka, while Group `B' has West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. — Special Correspondent
