Umakant, Arjun still ahead

AURANGABAD: Top seed Umakant Sharma and Arjun Tiwari maintained their joint lead at the end of the eighth and penultimate round in the National Under-25 chess championship here on Friday.

The leaders have 6.5 points each, after they signed the peace treaty on the top board. Second seed K. Ratnakaran and Vikas Sharma are on six points, followed half-a-point behind by Aravinderpreet Singh, P. Karthikeyan, Rajesh Kumar, S. Vikramjit Singh, Prathamesh Mokal, M. Vinay Kumar and Rishipal Singh.

The results (eighth round): Umakant Sharma (TN) 6.5 drew with Arjun Tiwari (Mah) 6.5; Aravinderpreet Singh (Pun) 5.5 drew with K. Ratnakaran (Ker) 6; Vikas Sharma (Pun) 6 drew with P. Karthikeyan (TN) 5.5; Rajesh Kumar (Jha) 5.5 drew with S. Vikramjit Singh (AP) 5.5; Sudhir Kumar Sinha (MP) 4.5 lost to Prathamesh Mokal (Mah) 5.5; R. Preetham Sharma (TN) 4.5 lost to M.
