HYDERABAD : The Badminton Association of India has decided to dispense with plastic shuttles from January 2007. Addressing the 125 delegates at the fourth All India badminton umpires / referees seminar at the Saroornagar Indoor Stadium here on Friday, S. Muralidharan, chairman of BAI Court Officials Committee, said the plastic shuttles were used in the sub-junior and junior category as an experiment. "But because of complaints from the players in their inability to adapt to the senior age category competitions, we decided not to use them in any of the events across the country," he explained. The chairman of COC also said that all National events in different age groups would have qualifying rounds of three games of 21 points each. To a query, he clarified that disruption of play due to an injury to a player could not be deemed as suspension of play and consequently the other player is not entitled to have any interaction with the coach as per the latest rules. Former All England champion and chief National coach Gopi Chand appealed to the umpires to be consistent in discharging their duties.
