BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday directed the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) not to go ahead with the recounting of the ballot papers for the elections held to the university Senate on July 5, 2007. The petitioners, Nidash D. Hegde, Putturaja V.M., Basavaraj G.C., Suresh S.N., and Dr. Nisarga, all professors in medical colleges in the State and are voters in the Professors' constituency. They had moved the High Court against the October 3 order of the Governor and Chancellor of RGUHS setting aside the election to the Senate and directing the university to recount valid ballot papers and declare the results. The Governor had taken the decision after one of the contestant, Tilak Raj, had complained about the process. In their petition, Dr. Hegde and others said on June 2 that the Returning Officer had issued a notification on the calendar of events. On June 20, a final list of candidates was issued and the elections were held on July 5. On July 15, Dr. Raj filed an election petition before the Governor. They said the Governor on October 3 set aside the election and directed recounting. Aggrieved by this order, the petitioners moved the High Court.
