BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh principal chief conservator of forests (Wildlife), P.B. Gangopadhyay, said here on Friday that there should be an eco-development programme to address the co-existence issue so closely linked with wildlife conservation and forest protection. Dr. Gangopadhyay made this assertion at a workshop on "Wildlife conservation and role of media" held at Van Vihar National Park as part of a series of programmes to mark Wildlife Week. He said the Tiger Task Force had laid stress on co-existence but as of today there was no specific programme to address this issue. In M.P. there are 748 villages inside national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Of these only 82 villages can be relocated, he said. Dr. Gangopadhyay said the eco-development programme was part of the Ninth Plan but in the Tenth Plan it was merged with Project Tiger and other PA-related activities. The State Director of World Wide Fund for Nature-India , Sangeeta Saxena, said that media could play a crucial role.
