Varanasi: Courtesy a World Bank project, Uttar Pradesh Traffic Directorate and the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), New Delhi are working at putting brakes on rising accidents on National Highway II, through scientific traffic management. A two-day workshop started on Friday at the Traffic Police Lines here to sensitise and train traffic police personnel in scientific management of traffic on NH-II. Inaugurated by Inspector General (Varanasi Zone) A.C. Sharma, the workshop will not only focus on training traffic police in the use of sophisticated traffic machinery, but increasing awareness of traffic rules among the people. The workshop is part of month-long drive at various places in Uttar Pradesh located on NH-II -- connecting Delhi and Kolkata -- to not only train traffic police for reducing accidents, but ensure active public participation in the drive. Special educative programmes will be conducted in villages edging the NH-II, to make people more traffic conscious. Deputy Director of U.P. Traffic Directorate Purnima Singh said three cities Agra, Lucknow and Varanasi have been provided hi-tech mobile traffic control van -- Interpretor. The mobile van is equipped with digital speed radar/detector, advanced breath analyser and video cameras. Dr Singh informed the State Government has decided to award Rs 200 to anyone, who rushes those injured in road accident to a health care centre. UNI
