RAMANATHAPURAM: An outbreak of dengue fever has been reported in some parts of the district, including Ramanathapuram town. Most of the hospitals, including private hospitals, have reported steady arrival of patients with high fever. Most of the cases were reported from Periyar Nagar and adjoining areas of Madurai Road in Ramanathapuram. The Collector, K.S. Muthuswaamy, said that out of 3,200 patients, who got treatment in various Government Hospitals in the district for fever during the current season, 23 were tested positive for dengue fever. Instructions were given to the health officials to expedite preventive measures in all vulnerable areas of the district.
Awareness campaign
He said a series of awareness programmes would be conducted in all villages. Officials of the Health and Education departments, teachers and students of all schools would be involved in the programmes. Mr. Ramasamy, Municipal Commissioner, Ramanathapuram, said that several persons were admitted to various hospitals with high fever. All 33 wards in the municipal limits had been divided into six zones to carry out preventive measures. All sanitary staff had been deployed for cleaning operation. Preventive measures were on to prevent breeding of mosquitoes. M. Palanisamy, Chief Educational Officer, said instructions were given to headmasters of various schools to brief the students on chikungunya and other diseases in the prayer meetings. Students would be asked to pass the information to their parents and others.
