NEW DELHI: With 54 new dengue-positive cases being reported at various hospitals across the Capital on Friday, the total number of registered dengue cases in the city so far has gone up to 743. However, after three continuous days of casualties due to the virus, Delhi heaved a sigh of relief as no other patient died due to the disease and the death toll remained 18. Continuing to register more dengue cases from within its premises, the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) admitted four more patients during the past 24 hours including two residential staff members. Concerned at the incidence of the disease on the campus, students and resident doctors have submitted a memorandum to AIIMS Director P. Venugopal alleging failure of the administration to check mosquito breeding. The memorandum alleged that the death of AIIMS student Raj Kiran was due to negligence of the management. Progressive Medicos and Scintists' Forum spokesperson Dr. Vikas Bajpai also alleged that the AIIMS management's "callousness had led to the current situation in the Institute". In all, 30 new dengue patients have been admitted to AIIMS during the past 24 hours. Four of them are from the AIIMS campus. Currently, 114 patients diagnosed dengue-positive are being treated at AIIMS, of whom 29 are from the campus. "The good news is that patients are also being discharged after treatment," said the AIIMS Medical Superintendent, Dr. D. K. Sharma. Speaking about the condition of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's son-in-law and two grandsons currently under treatment at AIIMS with dengue symptoms, Institute spokesperson Dr. Shakti Gupta said: ``Their condition is stable and they are recovering. They are likely to be discharged by Saturday.'' AIIMS, meanwhile, has put in place two phone help line numbers which would be available to the public from Monday to Saturday: 26589712 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and 9811301373 (5 p.m. to 10 p.m.). This service is in addition to the e-mail service (dengueprevention@gmail.com) that was launched on Thursday.
