NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday approved a Rs.240-crore project prepared by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for development of the historic Jama Masjid and its surrounding areas here as an international tourist site. Approving the project prepared by architect Pradeep Saxena, a Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Rekha Sharma directed the MCD to implement the project within 18 months. The Court appointed Vijay Singh, MCD's Deputy Commissioner in Central Zone, as nodal officer for implementation of the project. The Bench ordered that the Deputy Commissioner would not be transferred before the implementation of the project. It asked the Deputy Commissioner and the Court Commissioner of the Zone, advocate Kirti Uppal, to submit to the Court a monthly report about the progress of implementation of the project. The Bench also suggested to the local body to implement the project under public-private partnership. Meanwhile, Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari informed the Court that he had not encroached on the mosque property, and whatever he had built he had built it with the permission of the Government agencies concerned. The Imam also gave an undertaking that he would not encroach on the mosque property in future.
