NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old man arrested on charges of possessing a knife died under mysterious circumstances at the Mayur Vihar police station in East Delhi on Thursday night. Following the incident, two police personnel have been placed under suspension. While the police claimed that it was a case of natural death, relatives of the deceased alleged that the police had beaten him up before taking him to the police station. Claiming that for the past one year he had been trying to lead a normal life and had opened a shop for livelihood, they demanded strict action against those responsible for his death. Described by the police as a registered bad character of the area, Inder was allegedly a drug addict. Around 10-30 p.m. on Thursday he was arrested for allegedly possessing a knife and was kept in the police station lock-up along with seven others. According to the police, Inder began craving for drugs late at night and then fell asleep. On Friday morning, a sentry found him lying unconscious. Subsequently he was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. DCP (East Delhi) Ajay Chaudhry said a board of three doctors from different hospitals had been set up for post-mortem.
