NEW DELHI: The United Residents' Joint Action (URJA) has accused the Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi of failure to carry out thermal fogging across the city, a World Health Organisation-standardised action during or before the outbreak of dengue disease.
Firm `no'
According to a release by URJA, it had carried out a survey among hundreds of Residents' Welfare Associations across the city putting up a questionnaire asking if fogging and spraying operations had been carried out in their area. The answer to the query was a firm `No'. The RWAs associated with the survey included those from New Rajendra Nagar, Kotla Mubarakpur, Mayur Vihar, Ishwar Nagar, Priya Enclave, Rohini, Dwarka, Karol Bagh and Govindpuri to name a few. Only the RWAs from Chittaranjan Park, Vasant Kunj and Raja Garden said their areas had been fogged last week. Sandeep Sharma of Priya Enclave, who has filed a complaint with the local MCD office asking for fogging to be carried out, said: `The Delhi Government and MCD are simply relying on disseminating precautionary measures without taking any action themselves". Anant Trivedi, president of the Ishwar Nagar RWA, said it was not for the MCD to become a communication agency but a worker agency. "It must do what it is supposed to do." People's Action president Sanjay Kaul said: "WHO guidelines stipulate close to 14 actions mandated in the time of such an epidemic. We are dismayed to note that the Delhi Government has not been able to ensure even the first -- a basic thermal fogging in all areas of Delhi at the stipulated frequency." Mr. Kaul also came down heavily on the Government for trying to pass the buck on to RWAs and residents saying that educated residents should not have to bear the lecturing of inefficient and corrupt departments of the Government. "We know what we have to do and are doing it. The question is whether the Government agencies are doing what they should have done long ago."
