NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the Centre, the Delhi Government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to file detailed replies stating what steps they had taken to deal with the outbreak of dengue in the Capital.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Kailash Gambhir asked the governments and the civic bodies to file their replies by October 17. The Court pulled them up for not implementing its guidelines issued in 1998 to prevent outbreak of the disease in future. The Bench criticised the MCD for not covering the open drain behind the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) building despite its direction in 1998.

On an urgent mention by advocate Rajeev Awasthi accusing the above-mentioned respondents of abject failure to deal with the outbreak of dengue in the city, the High Court had on Thursday sought an immediate explanation from them.

Mr. Awasthi accused the respondents of not complying with the guidelines issued on a suo motu cognisance of the large number of deaths due to dengue in 1996.

The High Court had then directed that 10 major hospitals in the Capital must be fully equipped with necessary equipment and facilities to deal with day-to-day dengue patients in case of an outbreak of the disease.

It had asked the Delhi Government to prepare a dengue control programme for Delhi with regular budgetary provisions for taking effective measures to prevent an outbreak of the disease in future.
