KOCHI: Fast bowler S. Sreesanth was elated when the Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Girinagar, team won the regional round of The Hindu-Young World Quiz held at Toc-H Public School in Kochi on Saturday. The cricketer is an alumnus of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara.

The winning team comprised Ajay Parasuram and Siva Prasad Menon. Teams from Hari Shri Vidyanidhi School, Thrissur, won the second and third places. Sreesanth, who was the chief guest at the event, said he was not quite good at quizzing during his school days. "I was focused on dance and other stage events." Sreesanth told the youngsters: "Work hard and believe in your dreams." Students crowded around Sreesanth seeking his autograph.

As many as 230 teams from 84 schools in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki, Kottayam and Alappuzha districts participated in the event. Quizmaster V.V. Ramanan (a sports journalist with The Hindu ) set the ball rolling for the preliminary round (written) by asking the name of the God/Goddess who is called `Hamsavahini.' Once the answer manuscripts were collected, the quizmaster posed the question to the audience. After some consternation, students replied - `Saraswathy.'

As in the previous years, Mr. Ramanan's fondness for Roman numerals came to the fore. He asked the participants to write in Roman numerals the year of the Third Battle of Panipat - MDCCLXI (1761). He then asked the participants to complete the proverb - "A fool and his... " "... money are soon parted" pat came the reply. Those who came up with the correct answer were given gifts and cash prizes.

Bharat Venkat Epur of Quizwallahs, the event managers, made the session interesting by asking questions to `boys who had a white handkerchief,' `participants from Thrissur' and so on.

Southern Spice Music channel recorded the event. "It will be telecast thrice - at 6 p.m. on October 21 and 24 and at 10.30 p.m. on October 25 in the programme `Iscool," said Anuradha Ananth, producer of the programme. The regional rounds are being held at 13 centres across the country. Eveready is the title sponsor and Jamai ice-cream the associate sponsor. The national sponsors are: State Bank of Travancore, Tiger Biscuits, Garden City College, HP, Reliance, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Cycle Brand Agarbathis, Vizag Steel, Reynolds, Penguin and GCC. Maaza is the official drink and SS Music the television sponsor. The regional sponsors are Veegaland, Nutrifud Cakes, Vijayalaxmi Cashew Co., Mahindra Holidays and Samsung India Electronics.
