He has not composed music in that many films. But, over the last few years, he has tuned some extremely melodious songs. Songs like Oru narupushpamai in Meghamalhar, Chanchadi and Mukilin makale in Makalkku, and Parayan maranna... in Garshom prove that he is one of the more dependable composers in Malayalam cinema today. "I am not worried that I am not the busiest composer around," says Ramesh Narayan, who was in Kozhikode recently. "I prefer quality to quantity." He admits that the quality of music in Malayalam cinema has come down. "That is because some music directors prefer to be busy, rather than concentrating on composing good tunes. I can't understand why they agree to do so many assignments at the same time."
Besides composing music for films, he is also busy popularising Hindustani music in Kerala. "I am glad to find more youngsters coming forward to learn Hindustani music these days," he says. "And they have now opportunities to do so in Kerala itself. It wasn't so when I wanted to learn Hindustani music, way back in the 1980's." He had to leave Koothuparamba, his hometown, and to go to Pune so that he could find a guru.
