Cinema going digital

The digital route seems to be slowly opening up for the Malayalam film industry. Director V.K. Prakash's `Moonnamthoraal' sowed the seeds of change in an industry that refused to connect digitally.

Released in nearly 80 cinemas across the State by Thrissur-based Emil and Eric Private Ltd, the film was distributed to the theatres via satellite. Biburaj, General Manager of Emil and Eric Films, says the audience response was also good. "Viewers gave the feedback that features like picture quality and sound were exceptional," he adds. Buoyed by the initial response, the company has now plans to release some of the new movies in the digital format. The films include `Oruvan' (starring Prithviraj); `Ore Kadal' (Mamootty) and `Chakkaramuthu' (Dileep).

Kochi-based Lal Media Arts has entered into an exclusive strategic business alliance with Real Image Media Technologies in Chennai for introduction of high quality digital cinema initiatives.

"Digital cinema is the future of the motion picture industry and has taken giant leaps across the world," says actor turned producer Lal.

Director of Real Image Jayendra says that digital cinema will benefit creative people with high quality delivery. The industry will have better cost efficiencies and better returns for every project, he adds. Industry observers say the Kerala Film Exhibitors Federation has realised the advantages of digital format.
