Festival of Indian folk dance, music from October 17

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: India International Rural Cultural Centre (IRCEN) is organising a weeklong "Festival of Folk Dance and Music of India" from October 17 to celebrate the completion of its 27 years.

Over hundred young dancers and musicians from Gujarat, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh are expected to take part in the festival. They would present cultural programmes of their respective States. Former Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma will inaugurate the festival at Open Air Theatre in IRCEN Bhawan on Nelson Mandela Road.

IRCEN was established in 1979 under the presidentship of the then Chief Justice of India, Justice Y.V. Chandrachud, to promote art and social values in suburban, rural and tribal areas of the country. Gradually it spread its activities across the country and has emerged as a national level organisation.

The organisation has also established cultural exchange relations, on a non-official basis, with countries like Japan, China, Korea, Hungary, Lithuania and some African countries.
