Nagma wants to contest Vidisha seat: PCC chief

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: There is consensus among the Congress leaders and party workers here that the candidates selected by the party's Parliamentary Board and the party president, Sonia Gandhi, for the Vidisha parliamentary and Malehra Assembly by-elections in the State would be acceptable to them. This was disclosed by the AICC observer, J. P. Agrawal, at a Press conference here on Saturday.

The PCC president Subhash Yadav said that film actress Nagma had expressed the desire to contest the Vidisha seat. He said he was scheduled to meet her in Delhi on Sunday.

However, he said the Congress Parliamentary Board would decide the candidate. "The winds of change had started blowing in Madhya Pradesh and the by-election results would go in favour of the Congress party," he added.

Mr. Agrawal said the Congress candidates for the by-elections would be announced before the October 13 deadline for filing nominations. He said the party would be selecting strong candidates and launching a vigorous campaign to win both the Vidisha and Malehra elections.

While pointing out that the names of about a dozen probable candidates have been proposed for Vidisha, Mr. Agrawal said that the final decision would be taken at the Congress Parliamentary Board meeting in Delhi. He said he had held detailed discussions with former and sitting MLAs, ex-MPs, block and district party presidents and prominent party workers from the two constituencies going to the polls. Asked to share what the party workers from Vidisha had told him regarding their hopes and expectations, Mr. Agrawal said one of their prime concerns was that the State Congress leaders in Delhi should visit the constituency on a regular basis.

The Vidisha seat has been vacated by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan while the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti had quit the Malehra seat to form her new party— Bharatiya Janshakti.
