NEW DELHI: The Central Government has decided to a formulate scheme for providing financial assistance to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to take up design and development work in defence production through defence PSUs, ordnance factories and Indian industries with proven excellence and capable of contributing to defence production, depending on their technical, managerial and financial strength. Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday announced this on the occasion of presentation of the national awards at the National Convention of Small, Khadi, Village and Coir Industries here. According to him, the modalities of the scheme to provide institutional support to MSMEs in tendering/contracting and the like for defence supplies were being reviewed. Instructions had already been issued for extending marketing support to SSI units in the emerging competitive environment. The Defence Minister said the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was engaging a number of private sector companies in the development of defence products, particularly, components, assemblies and sub-assemblies.
