Student commits suicide

ERODE: A Standard X student of a tutorial college here committed self-immolation. According to the police, Guruprasad (17) of Moideen Street, poured kerosene on his body and set himself afire on Friday night. He was admitted to a private hospital where he died on Saturday. The Erode town police are investigating the case. - Staff Reporter

374 traffic offence cases in a day

ERODE: Under the instructions of Superintendent of Police Sonal V. Misra, the police conducted an intensive drive on Friday evening and booked 374 traffic offence cases. Of this, 74 cases were for speeding, 123 for driving without licence and seven for using mobile phone while driving and other offences. - Staff Reporter

Bharani Silk's novel venture

ERODE: Bharani Silks here has started a `rural restaurant' on its premises. According to its managing partner, N. Nallathambi, vegetarian food would be available at nominal cost in the hotel that had a village atmosphere. Portraits of personalities such as M.K. Thiyagaraja Bhagavathar and Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi had been placed.

Railway employee killed

SALEM: A railway employee Perumal of Poonammpet was killed on the spot when a train hit him near Railway Junction here on Friday. He was trying to cross the railway track when the accident took place. - Staff Reporter

Rain in Kanyakumari

Nagercoil: Normal life was affected following heavy rains that lashed various parts of the district on Saturday. An aged woman was electrocuted while she came in contact with a live wire. According to sources, Prakasi (70) was killed on the spot when she touched a live electric wire.

Pechipparai recorded a maximum rainfall of 32.2 mm, followed by Chittar I - 32, Chittar II - 29.2, Surulode - 15.2, Perunchani - 9, Myladi - 2.2 and Kannimar - 1.2. The water level in the Pechipparai dam stood at 40.10 feet (full level 48 feet), 64.30 feet in Perunchani (full level 77 feet), 11.81 feet in Chittar I (full level 18 feet) and 11.91 feet in Chittar II (full level 18 feet).

Blood donors' directory released

Nagercoil: The Collector, Sunil Paliwal, released a directory of blood donors at a function organised to mark the National Blood Donors' day at the Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital at Asaripallam recently. The directory contains names of 1,056 donors and their addresses.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said copies of the directory would be distributed among voluntary blood donor agencies in the district, which would act as a guide at times of emergency.

The Superintendent of the college, Arunachalam, welcomed. The Vice-Principal of the college, Leo Davis, received the first copy from the Collector. — Staff Reporter

Man killed

PERAMBALUR: C. Manivel (35) of Siruvachur was fatally knocked down in the village by a mini autorickshaw on the Chennai - Tiruchi National Highway on Saturday.

Police said that the incident occurred when he was crossing the road.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 97.43 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 6,248 cusecs and the discharge, 20,043 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

EC seals Assembly constituency

CHENNAI: The Election Commission has sealed the Madurai Central constituency, which goes to poll on October 11, and directed all outside elements, particularly political persons and supporters of parties who are not voters in the constituency to move out of the constituency from 5 pm on October 9.

According to an EC notification, this step has been taken to prevent outside elements from entering the constituency and creating an atmosphere that would affect the free and fair election.

The directive is applicable to all political functionaries who have been provided security by the State. District election officers and superintendents of police have been asked to ensure that all those political leaders who had been provided security by the State should not be allowed to remain in the constituency after campaigning was over. The officers should also restrict movements of such political functionaries in the constituency in which they were bonafide electors on the day of poll before and after they exercised their franchise. — Special Correspondent

Candidate commits suicide

Nagercoil: The candidate for ward no 3 of Nallur village panchayat committed suicide on Saturday by consuming poison. According to police sources, Sekar (24) of Myladi near Nallur took this extreme step owing to love failure. The police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

Tax exemption for colour TV sets

CHENNAI: The State Government by a gazette notification on Friday made an exemption in respect of tax payable on purchase of colour television sets by the Information Technology Department under the scheme of free distribution of CTV sets to families who do not own a colour TV. — Special Correspondent

VIT signs pacts with Chinese varsities

COIMBATORE: The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) has signed Memoranda of Understanding with five Chinese universities.

Disclosing this to reporters here on Saturday, Chancellor G. Viswanathan said the agreements were signed during the last two months. Chinese students could choose courses in computer science (B.Sc), BBA, B.Com. They could opt for either three plus one year or two plus two year courses (where they could study either three years or two years in China and the remaining period at VIT). In the first year, about 100 students were expected to join the courses. The main demand among the Chinese students was for computer science and English education, he said. — Staff Reporter

Structural engineers' meeting next year

CHENNAI: The third Structural Engineers World Congress (SEWC-2007) will be held between November 4 and 9 in Bangalore next year.

The congress, a forum for structural engineering professionals and aspirants, will feature presentations from leading practitioners from India, UK, USA, Japan, Turkey, Germany and France, representatives of SEWC India, told reporters here on Saturday during the Chennai launch of the information campaign about the congress. — Special Correspondent
