Match-fixing: police to question Gibbs

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi police plan to question South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs in connection with the match-fixing case when he visits India for the Champions Trophy that began on Saturday. He is expected to arrive in the Capital on October 10.

While the police are tight-lipped over the issue, it is learnt that they have prepared a set of 18 questions for him. The police would, if possible, question him at the hotel where he is scheduled to stay.

The match-fixing scandal was unearthed in 2000. During the investigations, the Crime Branch of the Delhi police had found that South African cricket team captain Hansie Cronje was involved in the scandal. The names of Gibbs and Nicky Boje had also come up during the investigation. Cronje, who was banned from the game for life, died in a plane crash later while Gibbs and Boje got away with minor punishment.
