NEW DELHI: Irom Sharmila continued her fast, demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The police moved her there from Jantar Mantar, the venue of her protest, on Friday night. Ms. Sharmila is being force-fed through a nasal tube. While the police have not formally charged her, she is not being allowed to leave AIIMS, claim activists.
Constant monitoring
With authorities worried that she would go back to Jantar Mantar and continue her fast, they are not willing to take any chances. Her condition is also being monitored constantly. Ms. Sharmila has become an icon after she launched a non-violent struggle for human rights in Manipur. She has been on an indefinite fast for nearly six years. She was released from judicial custody on October 3. While a delegation of civil rights activists met Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Friday, no consensus was reached. Civil rights activists continued to stage a dharna at Jantar Mantar on Saturday.
