Guntur
Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: After a long delay, two road overbridges being constructed in Guntur have picked up some momentum and the joint inspection committee of agencies concerned has promised to complete works by July next year. Guntur Member of Parliament Rayapati Sambasiva Rao on Saturday inspected the progress of works on both bridges and promised to ensure Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's presence at the inaugural. The MP discussed at length the status of the railway portion of works from Divisional Railway Manger C.S. Chauhan, and Roads and Buildings Superintendent Engineer D. Bhavanna Rao explained the progress of the R&B contractor's works. While the R&B promised to complete the Kankaragunta ROB by February 2007, the railway portion and link spans would take another month more. Work on the Manipuram ROB, which was at the centre of several controversies, is in full swing and could be completed three months ahead of the new schedule in July 2007. The construction began in April and was to be completed in 18 months.
Major problem
Formation of service roads at Manipuram ROB was the major problem and it was sorted out temporarily, but final black top road could be laid only after construction of sidewalls of approaches from Vijayawada and Guntur sides, the R&B officials observed. The team asked the GMC to cooperate in widening the approach road to railway wagon loading shed and constructing a road under-bridge at Nehru Nagar railway crossing, for which proposals would be sent to the Railway Board soon, the DRM said. The Guntur MP stopped at the Three Bridges junction and wanted the central pillar of the existing bridge removed under the railway lines and widened while doubling of the Gunutr-Krishna Canal railway line was taken up. Guntur-I MLA Sheik Subhani, Deputy Mayor Tadisetti Murali Mohan and other railway officials accompanied the team.
