`I did contemplate quitting'

BANGALORE: After twelve years in the professional circuit, ace striker Bhaichung Bhutia admits that the idea of quitting has crossed his mind.

"I did contemplate quitting the sport. But, I will continue even though I did give it (retirement) a thought," he said on the sidelines of the ongoing camp ahead of the AFC Cup qualifying match against Japan on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old striker, now donning Mohun Bagan colours in the National circuit, also spoke about the new National coach Bob Houghton.

"Ciric Milovan and Stephen Constantine emphasised on a particular system, but none of it worked out. The players and officials have accepted Bob Houghton, but the results have to prove his worth," he said.

"Houghton has looked good so far but he needs to see a lot more of local talents on view. Watching the Federation Cup and National League will give him a much broader perspective," he added.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka players who took part in the Santosh Trophy have been very critical of the facilities provided for the championship.

"Four players were forced to share a room and there were never enough toilets. After each practice session, we are asked to fetch empty bottles to fill water to quench our thirst," the players complained. Karnataka plays in the quarterfinal league, commencing from Oct. 14.
